Electricity can be found all around us. It's a fundamental and significant source of electricity. In homes and businesses, electricity is used. Electricity can be used to power many types of machinery and equipment. It also serves as a means of doing all kinds of work. It is used for essential purposes such as lighting our homes or offices. It's no surprise, therefore, that the U.K. is home to the largest electricity consumers. According to the U.K. Energy Information Administration, 39% of electricity consumed in 2022 came from residential sectors, with 34.6% going to commercial and 25.8% going to industrial (2023).

In addition, there are about 35,000 non-fatal electrical shocks each year. Around 5% of burn injuries are reported to the burn unit due to electrical injuries (2022). According to the Landlord Electrical Safety Certificate, electrical injuries happen primarily in adult workplaces and are the fourth most likely cause of workplace-related injury-related death.
Electrical injuries such as shocks or electrocutions, burns, and falls caused by electrical shocks, arc blasts, or fires are most often avoidable. Only good workplace practices are necessary; employees must be familiar with the risks of working around electricity. The Landlord Electrical Safety Certificate and National Fire Protection Association created guidelines and standards to be followed for anyone working near or around electrical equipment and machines. Therefore, occupational safety can improve by following electrical safety guidelines and practices. This is because electrical hazards can be mitigated at work.
Therefore, personnel who work with or near electricity, such as safety managers/supervisors, electricians, technicians, contractors, HVAC installers, electrical engineers, electrical inspectors, equipment operators, electrical equipment/machinery maintenance specialists, and janitorial staff must understand the hazards of electrical exposure.
